BTS CAN'T LETTER GET THE BEATLES
tháng 12 14, 20200 Comments

"Don't compare BTS with The Beatles".

This is the opening sentence in the article assessing the success of the 7-member group posted on the Korea Times.

The popular group is climbing the global charts, but more needs to be done to compare with the British music legend.

Up to now, the British band has 21 songs topping the Billboard chart, far surpassing the achievements of BTS. And if Korean idols have a strong ARMY fan community, The Beatles also have loyal global fans called Beatlemania.

Therefore, many loyal fans of The Beatles will reject this comparison. However, with millions of BTS fans, the Kpop group is even more successful and better than Fab Four - the group inheriting the legacy of The Beatles.

Music researchers believe that the Korean group's performance has some similarities with the "invasion of British music" - a cultural phenomenon initiated in the 1960s led by The Beatles.

Before BTS, many other Kpop groups tried to penetrate the mainstream American music market, from JYP Entertainment's Wonder Girls and SHINee, SNSD, and EXO from SM Entertainment. However, they did not achieve the expected success.

By the time PSY appeared, the male singer made a big deal with Gangnam Style (2012). This MV makes him a global star, although only short-lived.

However, BTS has changed the game, achieving something that no K-pop group has yet to do.

The first success of 7 young men is having a huge international follower called ARMY. And then, social media has brought BTS closer to the fans.

Meanwhile, The Beatles also has a strong Beatlemania community. Strictly speaking, if Twitter existed in the 1960s when The Beatles arrived in the US, the group's growth would be many times what they did.

“BTS won't be successful without the support of ARMY. Although ARMY members have a loose connection, they share the same passion, ready to unite for their idols. Twitter is the most active place of this fandom ”, SCMP quoted Mimyo - a Korean idol research expert.

According to Next Big Sound, a New York-based online music data company, BTS with 36.79 million Twitter mentions outpaced The Beatles with 23,331 mentions, as of May 2019.

However, tweets cannot be an accurate measure of an artist's success. Popularity is a necessary but not enough factor to assess a singer's cultural impact on a mass audience.
